Assemblymember Juan Alanis issued a statement on June 7, 2024, regarding the "California Together Against Retail Theft" package and its proposed amendments. Alanis emphasized his commitment to public safety and bipartisan cooperation.

"I joined this bipartisan package of important public safety bills to deliver on my promise to find common ground wherever possible to deliver quick action and real results on public safety issues like retail theft," Alanis stated. He expressed initial support for the bill package as a significant step toward addressing retail theft in California. "This bill package is not just a set of bills; it’s a testament to our commitment to the safety and security of Californians."

However, Alanis voiced concerns about potential new amendments. "I am frustrated with and have questions about the possible proposed new amendments," he said. He mentioned ongoing discussions with leadership from both political parties regarding these concerns, expressing hope that they would be taken seriously.

Alanis noted his satisfaction that his own bill, AB 1972, would remain unchanged. "I am encouraged by the promise that my bill, AB 1972, will not be amended," he remarked. He committed to closely monitoring developments in the coming days.

Alanis also highlighted the importance of voter input on policy decisions. "It continues to be my belief that the voters have the right to weigh in on policies they have previously set for themselves," he asserted.

Concluding his statement, Alanis reaffirmed his dedication to good-faith negotiations and being a voice of reason throughout the legislative process.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents California's 22nd Assembly District, which includes Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson & Empire.
