Assemblymember Juan Alanis has introduced two bills aimed at addressing concerns related to election processes in California. These proposals, presented during the new legislative session, are intended to enhance public trust in the state's electoral system.
Alanis highlighted the delayed announcement of results for California’s 13th Congressional District as a significant issue. "Literally one-twelfth of a year passed before we knew the winner," he stated. "This is not acceptable and it’s embarrassing for all Californians."
The first bill, AB 16, proposes that election officials begin processing ballots from the date they are initially mailed and continue as they are returned. This change aims to reduce delays in announcing results on Election Day.
Alanis expressed confidence in local elections officials but criticized state policies for contributing to slow counting processes. "I am not trying to impact the accessibility of voting, but rather to get results to the public quicker," he explained.
The second bill, AB 17, seeks to improve public access to county election information by mandating that local registrars provide details about precinct boundaries within their counties.
"It’s important that now, more than ever, we take steps to rebuild that trust and further the engagement of the public in our electoral process," Alanis said.
Acknowledging that other elected officials have their own proposals regarding elections this year, Alanis emphasized his commitment to bipartisan collaboration. "I am open to dialog, discussion and debate on these ideas," he remarked.
Both bills were introduced on December 2nd, marking the start of the 2025-26 legislative year. The Assembly will reconvene on January 6th.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents California's 22nd Assembly District, covering several communities including Modesto and Turlock.
