SACRAMENTO—Yesterday, Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced that the Governor had signed AB 1796 into law.

“AB 1796 will increase awareness of career-oriented class opportunities that all California students may not be familiar with,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “I am proud to make strides in the educational space and ensure that opportunities for students interested in the trades or those who want to pursue a college career are made transparently available to all students and their parents across California.”

AB 1796 requires schools to notify students, parents, or guardians of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Dual Enrollment courses available at their respective campuses. This legislation classifies IB and Dual Enrollment courses on the same level as Advanced Placement (AP) and Career Technical Education (CTE) courses.

Research indicates that high school students who enroll in advanced or technical courses are more likely to graduate and pursue successful careers. AB 1796 aims to improve communication between schools, students, parents, and guardians, thereby connecting students with optimal career-building opportunities.

“I want to thank Governor Newsom and my Senate and Assembly colleagues for supporting this bill and recognizing the impact it will have on students across California,” added Alanis.

AB 1796 is the first bill by Alanis signed into law this year and is the sixth bill overall by the Assemblymember signed by the Governor since he assumed office in 2023.
