Assembly Bill 1880, introduced by Assemblymember Juan Alanis, has been signed into law by the Governor. The bill aims to provide protections for child influencers.
“I want to thank the Governor and my colleagues for supporting this important legislation that will protect kids from exploitation,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “Financial exploitation is a serious issue for children who create content online, and it is our duty to ensure they are not only physically safe but also protected from potential financial harm.”
The new law extends the Coogan Law’s protections to minor online content creators. Originally enacted to safeguard child actors’ earnings, the Coogan Law requires that a portion of a child’s earnings be set aside in a trust account, known as a “Coogan Account,” which the child cannot access until reaching adulthood. This measure ensures that young performers' earnings are preserved for their future use.
“This bill sends a clear message that minors have rights and deserve protection, and I will continue advocating for the welfare of our most vulnerable populations,” said Assemblymember Alanis.
The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) expressed gratitude towards Assemblyman Alanis after the bill was signed into law.
The bill will go into effect on January 1, 2025. It is the 13th bill authored by Alanis to be signed into law during his first term. Three more bills authored by him remain with the Governor for review and consideration.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes communities such as Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson & Empire.
