Assemblyman Alanis issues statement on apparent defeat of SB 94

Aug 29, 2024

Today’s announcement that SB 94 will not come to a vote due to a lack of support in the Assembly has been welcomed by victims and families of heinous crimes across California. Assemblyman Juan Alanis, Vice Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee, expressed his satisfaction with the bill's apparent defeat.

"For two years, I have worked hard as the Vice Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee to defeat this bill," Alanis stated. "Far too often, we hear about the rights of criminals here in Sacramento, while the rights of victims are trampled upon."

Alanis emphasized his commitment to ensuring that victims and their families do not have to endure additional trauma from the release of criminals sentenced to life in prison for severe offenses such as murder and rape.

"I am proud that we were able to help ensure the wounds of victims and their families for crimes as horrific as murder and rape will not have to be reopened by the release of criminals who have been rightfully sentenced to life in prison," he added. "As a former career law enforcement officer I celebrate this major victory for justice and victims’ rights."

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson & Empire.
