Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced on Apr. 16 that AB 1617, a bill designed to streamline household hazardous waste reporting requirements, passed the Assembly Floor with unanimous support.
The legislation aims to reduce administrative burdens for local governments by aligning reporting timelines for facilities that handle household hazardous waste. Currently, these facilities must submit similar data to both CalRecycle and the Department of Toxic Substances Control, but the differing deadlines have created extra paperwork and challenges for nearly 200 facilities managed by local governments across California.
“Local governments are working hard to manage hazardous waste safely, but duplicate reporting requirements create unnecessary paperwork and pull focus away from serving their communities,” said Assemblymember Alanis.
AB 1617 proposes moving CalRecycle’s Form 303 submission schedule to match the calendar-year timeline used by DTSC. Supporters say this change will simplify compliance while ensuring state agencies continue receiving essential data about household hazardous waste collection efforts.
“I’m proud to see AB 1617 pass with bipartisan support on the Assembly Floor,” said Alanis. The bill now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
